If trauma isn't stored in the body, what's really happening?

A deeper look at metaphor, mechanism, and the embodied brain.

Metaphors are powerful in helping us meet complex and often deeply painful experiences with grace and courage.
They help us move toward what feels unknown or overwhelming, opening space for meaning, healing, and possibility.
But metaphor has limits. When we begin treating metaphor as mechanism, as though poetic language is a literal explanation of biology, we risk misunderstanding the very thing we’re trying to illuminate.
Recently, a friend forwarded me a message on Instagram. The first slide read:
“There is fascia inside your vagina. It holds memory. It holds tension. And almost no one has ever told you it’s there.”
The post goes on to explore how the fascia is the “body’s living record” and invites us to not attempt to “fix”, but allow trust to reemerge. It talks about how the “bracing” is not wrong, but was, at some point, an appropriate response to something that happened in this region.
I genuinely love this post. It is compassionate, validating, and beautifully written. It reminds us that our bodies adapt intelligently, that protection isn't pathology, and that healing isn't about forcing ourselves to change.
And yet, it also highlights something important: how easily metaphor can be taken for the reality of our biology.
**If you’re a professional movement, somatic, or body-based educator, trainer, coach or counselor and you find yourself using metaphor to support your clients and students – or you’re a client or student who resonates with the statement that your tissue “holds memory” – I invite you to ask yourself:
What's really happening in the brain and body when memories or emotions seem to emerge during touch, movement, or simply bringing awareness to a particular area of the body?
In movement and somatic work, we often use the phrase "holding memory" as shorthand for something we're observing.
For example, we might notice that certain positions, movements, or manual techniques consistently evoke strong emotions, protective responses, or shifts in awareness. Those observations are real and worth taking seriously.
The question is whether the best explanation is that fascia stores memory, or whether these experiences emerge from interactions between touch, movement, interoception, context, and a predictive nervous system that has learned associations over time.
Both explanations can describe the same lived experience. The difference lies in how we explain it.
My intention isn't to dismiss what people experience during body-based work, but to become more precise about why those experiences might occur. **
Beneath the metaphor is a message I deeply agree with:
Your body adapted intelligently.
Protective patterns are not pathology.
Chronic bracing is often an adaptive response.
Healing isn't about forcing change (nor could you even if you tried)
The nervous system needs experiences of safety before protection softens.
We get into trouble over time when the metaphors we use over simplify, overlook, and distort – even subtly – what’s actually happening in the body and the brain, making us less effective as practitioners.
The encouraging news is that this isn't a complete departure from what many of us already believe. It's a refinement. But it's a refinement that changes how we understand change itself.
Can it feel as though fascia and muscle are "holding trauma"? Absolutely.
Does chronic stress change muscle tone, posture, breathing, autonomic function, inflammatory processes, and the body's hormonal environment? Without question.
Those physiological changes absolutely influence connective tissue, but that's different from saying fascia itself stores emotion.
Strong emotional experiences change nervous system activity (moving it toward connection/safety or threat/danger), which changes the mechanical environment of fascia. That is a very different causal chain than fascia storing emotional content.
If we interpret fascia as literally preserving the "shape" of emotional events we risk the assumption that healing work need only be done in the fascia. And THAT is the gap.
Fascia can and does change with powerful strategies like the MELT Method, orthopedic massage, and Rolfing, but it often returns to its “defensive” shape because the nervous system hasn’t changed. Safety hasn’t been created in the system to allow for the tissue to adapt long term.
Fascial change isn't just tissue change. It's nervous system change expressed through tissue.
Current predictive neuroscience says:
The nervous system updates predictions based on experience. Those predictions influence posture, movement, muscle tone, autonomic state, attention, perception, and pain. We have an adaptive system continually reorganizing itself.
Let’s look at one more piece from the post: "The work is to let the tissue know the moment has passed."
From a predictive neuroscience perspective, it isn't the tissue that needs to know the moment has passed. It's the nervous system.
More specifically, it's the predictive networks that continue anticipating danger.
The tissue isn't making predictions, or interpreting context, or deciding whether now is safe. The nervous system is.
The nervous system, not the fascia, predicts danger, interprets context, and determines whether protection is still necessary. The tissue participates in that process, but it does not generate it.
And while you might be thinking that the distinction is semantic, it completely changes how we understand change as a fully integrative, embodied brain process.
Metaphors like:
your body remembers
your fascia holds trauma
your tissues tell the story
Can be incredibly validating and help people move away from blame and toward compassion. Without a doubt, they serve an important purpose, but now neuroscience offers a framework that is even more empowering. One that expands our understanding to how the whole embodied system is continuously learning, not just the body.
And not because the tissue is storing yesterday, but because it’s participating in today's predictions.
Perhaps the body doesn't keep the score in quite the way we've imagined. Perhaps what it does is something even more remarkable.
With every experience, be it internal, external, or between us and another person, the embodied brain is constantly learning.
The connective tissue, the muscles, the organs, the breath, the heart, the immune system…they aren't static containers that only hold the past or what was learned. They're active participants in an ongoing conversation between brain and body about what is happening right now.
And that conversation can change when we create new, safe, novel experiences.
